Mundane and Mäd are polar opposites to us. But, weekly work surely requires a degree of repetitiveness or habits shaped to maximize success- we decided to explore the routines of our team, to share our industry insights and introduce the colorful characters behind our work.
Today, we caught up with Vanneth Chan - Web Developer.
Coming from a small town where technology is scarce, my dream was to work with technology. It was a dream that I never thought would come true. However, my life completely changed when I was granted with a full-ride scholarship to study web design in Phnom Penh. From that moment, I fell in love with web development and decided to pursue it as a career. Having had many years of experience in the field, I think it is safe to say that the work that I do excites me and it has become my everyday motivation.
Motivation is a hot topic in business. The cliches such as 'love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life' may seem a little passé, but there's a clear correlation between passion/motivation and focus, which leads to great results.
Hobbies? Badminton and watching cooking videos.
Favorite place? Prey Kong Kang in Kampot.
Favorite software? WordPress... obviously!
Personality type? ISFJ.
Proud achievements? Having published 65 websites in multiple industries including corporate, hospitality, e-commerce, banking & finance.
Strength? A fast learner - I catch on things pretty quickly.
What does your daily task list tend to look like?
Since my tasks vary from day-to-day, planning is my friend. In order to stay on top of my game, I always keep my agenda close because I need to know what needs to be done today so I can plan accordingly for the day after. In that sense, Bloo helps me stay organized and keep track of all of my tasks.
Hence, my day usually starts with Bloo to check on my work progress and determine the tasks that are the priority for the day. Being able to have a clear agenda helps me stay focused and productive for the rest of the day.
Organisation is such an important topic. When Mäd ran into some organisational headaches in previous years, we decided to simply build a solution to future-proof our operations. Thus, Bloo was born. If you've spent any time on our website you'll spot it mentioned in abundance, as we've centralised a lot of processes through one simple platform.
The Bloo team share the Mäd office, which is ideal, as we can constantly make the product better whenever we encounter desirable add-ons or features. The personal touch, and high usage both in-house and with clients, has led to our team management software progressing efficiently, at speed.
What are you currently working on?
Due to the nature of my job, I see myself as a behind-the-scene person because my work usually happens in the background, while a lot of client-facing communication is being communicated to me by our frontline team.
Currently, I am working on developing a mobile app (API). This project is special to me because, as opposed to the usual, I am able to be where the communications are happening.
I have been able to work directly with my client, partners, and stakeholders. While this is also my first API project on a mobile app, I believe that after this project, I will be able to assist many more clients in this expertise in the future. Overall, it has been a fun experience because I am able to broaden my skillset while practicing on my communication skills.
What's your biggest achievement at Mäd, so far?
I feel like this is more than just my biggest achievement at Mäd but the biggest achievement of my career, thus far. It was my first ever banking-related project. Prior to this project, I never thought that WordPress would work well with banking functions. From the project, I was able to discover more about the functions and plug-ins for banking that WordPress can provide such as loan application, loan/rate calculator, etc.
It was a major breakthrough for me because banking project was new to me, nonetheless, I was able to overcome the challenges while expanding my skills in the banking sector. So far, I have completed two banking projects at Mäd.

How did you discover Mäd?
I discovered Mäd through a friend who was working there at the time. I was intrigued by their non-traditional approach from the office environment to the working style. I never thought I was capable enough to be a part of the team. Coincidentally, Mäd was looking for a web developer so I decided to give it a shot and showed up for the interview.
The culture behind an office, and constructing harmonized 'team-fit' individuals, is often overlooked. It's easy to look at the brick and mortar, and create stylish work-spaces, but a team may not flourish without implementing effective working styles and strategy.
With this in mind, Mäd has developed an extensive and transparent SOPs to guide our team to success. We're constantly self-auditing to ensure our practises are inline with our future goals, and that our team and individual growth maintains at a high level.
What do you enjoy working at Mäd?
Being a full-stack web developer comes with a lot of stress and pressure. On top of that, there is also the external pressure from employers, which can make the job become dreadful.
Given the flexibility at Mäd, I have the freedom to control my own workflow which is really helpful when it comes to managing the stress. Such freedom makes me feel happy to work and helps me stay focused on the projects. The open space work environment allows natural light and green plants making Mäd an enjoyable place to work. It kind of gives you a peace of mind.
